Whether you have been living in our part of Hertfordshire for a while or you are a relative newcomer to the charms of this legendarily green county, it’s hard to argue against its suitability for golfing – after all, few areas of the UK can boast such beautiful and extensive rolling countryside.
You won’t be too surprised, then, to hear that there is many a golf country club in Hertfordshire. But which characteristics should you seek in such a club, and why is Shendish Manor a strong proposition in this regard?
1. A challenging golf course
One of your very first priorities will always be the standard of the course itself. Our own 5660 yard, par 70 course provides an excellent mix of hazards through both parkland and woodland copses, having been designed to US PGA specifications.
2. Reasonable green fees
Yes, you may expect a lot from a golf country club in Hertfordshire, but you shouldn’t be priced out. Thankfully, the current weekday green fees here at Shendish Manor are just £16.50 for those aged over 60, and £13.50 for golfers in the 16-and-under age bracket. The equivalent fees at weekends are £23.50 and £18 respectively.
3. Strong transport links
Shendish Manor is located in Apsley, a charming 19th-century mill village near the towns of Watford and Hemel Hempstead, which are both a less than 10-minute drive away. Even central London can be reached in a mere 30-minute train ride, which helps to make our golf country club in Hertfordshire not only a convenient one to reach, but also attractively located for a golf break.
4. The opportunity for corporate membership
As more companies continue to base themselves in the Watford and Hemel Hempstead areas, so more firms are contemplating investing in corporate membership of the Shendish Manor Golf Club to reward their hardworking employees. Both standard and tailor-made packages are available.
5. Attractive golf-break packages
Alternatively, you may be based much further afield than Hertfordshire, or you may simply be interested in a short stay that incorporates all of the best things about a great golf break. Book a golfing holiday at Shendish Manor, and you can look forward to a comfortable and spacious bedroom, a fulfilling breakfast, a delicious three-course dinner and a couple of rounds of highly stimulating golf.
The Shendish Manor Golf Club is open – weather permitting – 365 days a year. So why not call us now, on 01442 251806, to learn more about how you can become a member or otherwise take advantage of a golf country club in Hertfordshire that truly caters to its users’ needs?

Most of us, if we were asked, would express a wish to tie a knot in a location that intrigues us. That’s one reason why so many people are drawn to historic settings when they are seeking out wedding venues – and as one of the most popular wedding venues in Apsley here at Shendish Manor, we can confirm that the village is definitely an interesting place to formalise one’s union.
So, why should you be especially intrigued by the thought of getting married here?
It’s steeped in history
For such a seemingly unassuming location, Apsley has certainly played a key part in British history. It was here that, during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, saw extensive paper making activity, thanks partly to the construction of what later became the Grand Union Canal, but also to a man known as John Dickinson, who purchased an existing mill in the locality in 1809.
Dickinson will always be known in history as the inventor of a new method of continuous papermaking, which was to be so successful that the last warehouse in the area bearing his name did not close until 1999, some 130 years after his death.
Today, the sole surviving member of a number of 19th-century paper mills in Apsley is Frogmore Mill, which now houses a museum.
Meanwhile, back in the mid-19th century, an impressive residence had been built on the Shendish Manor estate under the ownership of Dickinson’s business partner Charles Longman. Having passed through the Longman family for the rest of the 19th century and into the early 20th century, the property was sold to John Dickinson Stationery in 1936.
That property is, of course, today’s Shendish Manor
The same Victorian splendour enjoyed by generations of the Longman family – now better known for its publishing activities – remains evident at the present-day Shendish Manor, which has risen to become no less than one of the most esteemed wedding venues in Apsley.
The remarkable heritage of our surroundings is even alluded to in the name of one of our wedding suites – the Apsley Suite, which with its elegant decor and sparkling chandeliers, offers the perfect ambience for newlyweds and as many as 320 guests. However, another impressive space – the mid-19th century Manor House itself – is also available, and exudes undeniable historical charm.
So, there you have it – the humble mill village of Apsley is a rather more special place to get married than you might have ever thought. So, why hesitate to make Shendish Manor your first choice among the many other highly regarded wedding venues in Apsley?

We’ve always had a taste for big events here at Shendish Manor, as you will be able to appreciate merely by glancing at our special events page. However, there’s one event, in particular, set to take place at our hotel that could be invaluable for your preparations for your own special day: our Wedding Fayre.
It happens from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 14th January 2018, is free to enter and gives you the perfect opportunity to talk to a range of exhibitors about the services they could provide to help to make your nuptials a resounding success.
It’s also an obvious chance, of course, for you to get ‘up close and personal’ with the Victorian splendour of Shendish Manor itself. Once you’ve discovered our charming venue and its 160 acres of elegant parkland and formal gardens, you may not feel the need to consider any other wedding venue!
Could we represent the perfect wedding package in Hertfordshire?
When you think of all of the things that a dream wedding venue typically offers, it’s difficult to deny that Shendish Manor offers stronger credentials than almost anywhere else in Hertfordshire. There are certainly few buildings in the county that are more distinguished from a historical standpoint; there has been a manor on this site since about 1300.
That sense of history is also apparent through such in-demand spaces for wedding receptions as our Manor House, which dates back to 1853 and boasts the high ornate ceilings, oak panelling, Jacobean fireplace and sweeping staircase that truly mark it out as somewhere special. Its maximum capacity – including evening guests – is 160, although we can also offer the sophisticated Apsley Suite in the east wing of our property, which is suitable for as many as 320 guests.
All in all, you could hardly hope to find a more inspiring place to tie the knot with your beloved, not least given the presence of our knowledgeable and experienced Wedding Co-ordinators, who will be able to assist in making your wedding day an occasion to remember for all of the finest reasons. They will also be available for you to talk to at the Wedding Fayre.
Make the most of your visit this New Year
We can’t think of many better ways to welcome in the New Year than taking those first steps that are so crucial to ensuring that your wedding day passes by without a hitch (other than you getting hitched). Why not take the chance while you are here to also enjoy a Light Lunch or Traditional Afternoon Tea with us, while you consider the merits of our wedding package in Hertfordshire?
Call our Events team now on 01442 232220, or email them via email@example.com, to find out more about our Wedding Fayre and how it could help you to prepare in the best possible way for the most important day of your life

It will be a delicious three-course lunch with coffee and mints, and for which the price is £19.95 for each adult, and £9.95 for every child aged between three and 12.
There can be no better way to mark Christmas Day
How are you planning to spend Christmas Day itself? You could, of course, just stay at home like you always do, or you could celebrate it in thoroughly remarkable style by attending our very special Christmas Day Luncheon.
Priced at £89 for adults and £45 for children, our Christmas Day Luncheon will be far from just another Christmas lunch. It will involve our dedicated chefs carefully preparing some utterly magnificent cuisine for you and your family, the festive spirit even further maximised by the fact that Santa will have dropped by the previous night with gifts for all of the children.
Whoever said Boxing Day couldn’t be special?
Boxing Day may not exactly rank as the most memorable day of the year for most of us – you might usually spend yours snoozing at home amid all of the unwrapped presents – but it’s a very different matter when you instead spend it at Shendish Manor.
We have a fabulous three-course lunch on offer for Boxing Day this year, presenting you with the perfect opportunity to relax with family and friends and enjoy a pleasant stroll in our hotel grounds. The lunch itself is complemented by coffee and mince pies, and can be enjoyed for just £32.50 for each adult, and £16 per child.

We all know it, so let’s just remind ourselves of it: Christmas Day is truly the most special day of the year. Here at Shendish Manor, we’d also like to think that we’ve not forgotten one of the most important things about Christmas Day – the opportunity that it presents to get together with your loved ones, share gifts and simply have a wonderful time in each other’s company.
We’re mentioning all of this because we think that Christmas Day should be celebrated in the utmost style. So why not have your Christmas Day lunch in Hertfordshire, or to be more exact, at our resplendent historic venue here at Shendish Manor?
Our Christmas Day Luncheon simply should not be missed
The splendid Victorian architecture of our manor house and our well-appointed rooms help to make our hotel a very welcoming place to spend the festive season. Those delights include a choice of such starters as cream of butterbean soup, chicory tart, walnut and pear salad, or smoked salmon and brown shrimp roulade. Then, it’s time for your main dish – how do the likes of roasted Norfolk turkey breast, oven baked lamb rump and baked tomato galette sound?
Your dessert options range from traditional Christmas pudding and tangy lemon tart to chocolate truffle torte, while a selection of British cheeses, crackers, grapes, celery and fruit chutney will also be available. Oh, and there are the obligatory mince pies, too!

You might have expected such a resplendent historic venue as ours to represent the finest in gentility, and that is rarely a truer characterisation of the atmosphere here at Shendish Manor than during our Traditional Afternoon Teas, which have become something of a legend among our regular special events.
If you have never before attended a Traditional Afternoon Tea with us before, they’re very much what they sound like: gentle occasions to enjoy with your family, friends or loved ones, tucking into a selection of finger sandwiches and assorted other menu items and desserts. They’re great occasions on which to get together, have fun and generally chat the afternoon away.
Well, we’re delighted to announce that our ever-popular Traditional Afternoon Teas aren’t going anywhere this Christmas! In fact, they’re being given something of a seasonal twist, as we explain in greater detail below.

All of the above can be booked for a mere £18.95, with Christmas Tipples also available at an additional charge. However, we would advise you to book quickly if you fancy joining us, as we expect all of the events in our packed Christmas programme this year to be subject to huge demand.
Alternatively, you may be interested in the Festive Afternoon Tea with Local Choir that we have planned for Sunday 10th December. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy all of the things that make our Traditional Afternoon Teas wonderful, tucking into the buffet to a soundtrack of some of the area’s fabulous singing talents.
The price for the aforementioned event also represents excellent value, at £19.95 for adults and £9.95 for children aged between three and 12 years. It really does promise to be an exceedingly memorable occasion in all of the finest ways.

Since the conversion of our historic country house into a hotel in the 1990s, it’s fair to say that we’ve had a bit of a ‘thing’ about Christmas. After all, you would struggle to find a more resplendent venue anywhere in Hertfordshire in which to celebrate it than Shendish Manor, with its Victorian main building but also much longer history, going as far back as the 13th century.
We’re sure that right now, though, you’re much more interested in the future than in the past, especially if you’re seeking the perfect festive season lunch offers that will enable you to enjoy both Yuletide and the New Year in style.
You’ll find more information about all of them in our Christmas brochure that we have just released – but what are some of the highlights of this season’s packed events calendar?

A glass of Champagne will be provided on arrival, and with Santa having stopped by the previous night to drop off the children’s gifts, it promises to be a wonderful night for the entire family.
Even after all of that, we’ve got a Boxing Day lunch, New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner and New Year’s Eve Dine and Disco lined up for you all. We really do believe in treating you throughout the festive season here at Shendish Manor.
